about

"First Matthew" was inspired by two photographs of David Wojnarowicz, taken by Peter Hujar, on view at MoMA.

It was also influenced by my reading of Patti Smith's excellent book Just Kids, which I highly recommend: bit.ly/1tnxWHX

This is the tenth installment of EXHIBIT, a museum-based serial song project.

Prior to the creation of each song in the series, I spend time in the museum of my choosing. Within one week's time, I compose and record a song inspired by the visit.

lyrics

FIRST MATTHEW

Matthew my love, I know how this ends
First you lean over, then you fall in
Run yourself raw for any blue eye
But reflections are just made of water and light

Matthew my dear, they're coming for you
So keep your sweet head down whatever you do
Your gut says to flee, your heart says to fight
But I say remember the water and light

Matthew my love, I know what comes last
The stall and the stutter and then the collapse
Your body's a goner but your soul it glows white
You always were made up of water and light

The songs are deceptively serene, layering Youngs’ infectious pop sensibilities atop lush, dreamy arrangements that often belie the swift emotional currents lurking underneath. ... more
