Another Castle
02:44
|
|||
I been through the swamplands
Over mountains, under seas
Searching through the badlands
For the one thing that I need
But every time a drawbridge come down
Gatekeeper will say with a frown:
Your princess is in another castle
Sorry for the hassle
Strangely it’s a common mistake
But the thing is, what complicates a princess
She’s always where you look last
So think fast
For everyone’s sake
And remember anybody can break
No man’s born an island
But I wish that I could learn
Cause I might spend my last life
Licking lamplight, getting burned
I curse the haunted heart in my chest
It pulls me forward every step
Says:
Your princess is in another castle
Sorry for the hassle
Would you just prefer to pretend
One princess can’t be in every castle
Avoiding poison apples
And scrolling from her canopy bed
So re-start and forget
Listen it wasn’t what it looked like
I never really felt right
But I tried to make it okay
An apple is just an allegory
The moral of the story
Is you’ll reap whatever you sow
So watch your step as you go

Lost
02:51
|
|||
In the half light
Feeling half right
Hold you in my mind
Like a fading ember
How could you be
Out of my reach
Like a melody
That I can’t remember
I’ve been asleep so long
Waiting to hear your call
How did I get so lost
So lost
In the mirror
Getting clearer
The fallen hero
Of a past adventure
Was a deep sleep
Full of dark dreams
I know you found me
But I can’t remember
I’ve been away so long
Listening for your song
How did I get so lost
So lost
So lost, so lost
So lost, so lost
I’ve been asleep so long
Waiting to hear your call
How did I get so lost
So lost

Wake up and I’m starting over
Static humming in my head
Every day is now or never
Back into the fray again
Been swallowing pills so long
Just trying to feel less wrong
Oh I know you’ve got your own
Ghosts to outrun, my love
But all I see is you and me
In a world I’ve been dreaming of
Don’t know what I’m even chasing
Grabbing everything in sight
Hate it but I can’t help reaching
For something better, burning bright
Been swallowing pills so long
But they never fix what’s wrong
Oh I know you’ve got your own
Ghosts to outrun, my love
I close my eyes and
All I see is you and me
In a world I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
All of the years that I’ve been running round now
Grinding my gears against the uphill ground now
Just when I think I’ve reached the end
A blink and I have to start again
Again
Oh I know you’ve got your own
Ghosts to outrun, my love
I close my eyes and
All I see is you and me
In a world I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
I’ve been dreaming of
We said this would be forever
Took my name, we took a shot
Now we’re just alone together
Not knowing how much time we got

The chosen goes alone
Made of heaven and blood and bone
No one would want this but fate doesn’t ask
Whoever longed for a lonely path
Oh how it burned the night you knew
The finger of the gods put the mark on you
Look to the sky to find what’s true
Did they put the light or the dark in you
Rode the north wind to the west
Followed your map to its gilded edge
And no compass will say
The difference between grey and grey
Oh how it burned the night you knew
The finger of the gods put the mark on you
Look to the sky to find what’s true
Did they put the light or the dark in
Dark in you
Once you feel the blade of providence
At your neck
You can’t forget
From a cinder to a spark
Whispered answer from the stars
Oh how it burned the night you knew
The finger of the gods put the mark on you
Look to the sky to find what’s true
Did they put the light or the dark in
Dark in you

Jenny Owen Youngs Maine
Avalanche, Youngs’ exceptional debut for Yep Roc records, offers up an achingly beautiful exploration of loss, resilience, and growth from an artist who’s experienced more than her fair share of each in recent years. The songs are deceptively serene, layering Youngs’ infectious pop sensibilities atop lush, dreamy arrangements that often belie the swift emotional currents lurking underneath. ... more
